A selection of photographs from the location where most of Void takes place.

Void opens with Tom waking in a freezing car that is parked on a hill. This is the spot where he was parked, and the disorienting view he was presented with. That morning, however, a freezing fog obscured the horizon.

When Tom was young the houses on the left did not exist. That spot was undulating scrub land over which the gun-stand could be reached. Below is the Motorway flyover from the same spot.

The building on the left is the Foundry where Tom stayed. As you can see it is no longer a bar. The look I had in mind while writing, however, is the building on the right, which is nestled in among the steelworks.

A couple of images that demonstrate how steep the hill actually is.
As well as playing a significant role in Void this hill was also part of the route used when the Tour de France went through Yorkshire.
I love that the old gas lamp is still there.

The sign of a failing memory or a complex timeline?

When writing the six books that preceded Void, I was able to hold the ongoing events in my head. With Void I found this impossible to do and had to resort to posting notes on the wall beside my desk. These were altered, added to and rearranged in order as the story progressed. There is software available for this, but a quick glance to the side, as the narrative reflected back to a point in Tom's past, suited me much better.
